The Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are a group of five freshwater lakes in North America on the border between the USA and Canada. Superior is so called not because it is the largest, but because it is higher upstream than the others. Huron takes its name from the name French settlers gave to a local Indian tribe (from hure, a boar’s head). No one knows where the name Michigan comes from, but Erie and Ontario are both form the Iroquios language. Erie means cat, the animal the tribe used as its symbol. Ontario simply means beautiful lake. The Lake Superior is the Greatest Lake in the world is in the located at Canada/USA which stretches its wings of about 82,414 sq km. The Huron is the second greatest lake in the world which is located in Canada/ USA which stretches its wings of about 59,596 sq km. The lake Michigan is the third Great Lake in the world which is in USA having the total length of about 58,016 km.

Greatest waterfalls

The flow of many water falls varies according to the season, and some have been reduced by building dams to harness their power for hydroelectric plants. The flow of the Boyoma waterfall is equivalent to 17 million liters a second – enough to fill more than 140,000 baths per second, or enough for every person on Earth to have two baths a day! The first greatest water fall in the Earth is Boyoma (Stanley) which is in Dem. Rep of Congo is having the average flow is 17,000 m2 per second. The second greatest waterfall is the Khonet which is in Laos and the average flow is about 11,330 m2 per second. The third Greatest is the Niagara (Horseshoe) which is in Canada and the average flow is about 5,830 m2 per second. The Grande is the fourth greatest waterfalls which is in Uruguay having the average flow is about 4,500 m2 per second

The longest River

The source of the Nile was discovered by Europeans in 1858 when British explorer John Hanning Speke reached Lake Victoria Nyanaza, in what is now Burgandi. Almost a hundred years later, in 1953, the source of the Amazon was identified as a stream called Huarco flowing from the Misule glacier in the Peruvian Andes mountains. By following the Amazon from its source and up the Rio Para it is possible to sail for 6,750km, which is slightly more than the length of the Nile. But Geographers do not consider the entire route to be part of the Amazon basin, so the Nile, with an overall length of 6,695km, is considered the world’s longest river. The river Nile is the longest river in the world, which is flowing through the Burgandi, Dem, Rep, of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda which stretches its wings of about 6,695 kilo meters in length.

Lowest places

Sea level is the average height of the sea at a point midway between high and low tides. The shore of the Dead Sea is the lowest exposed ground below sea level, but the sea bed is lower still – 728m below sea level. The deepest point of Lake Baikal in Russia is 1,741m. Some land in Antarctica is 2,538m below sea level, but is covered by a 2,100m – deep ice cap. The Very Lowest place in our planet is the Dead Sea which is located in Israel/Jordan with the maximum depth below the sea level is 400m. The second place is the Lake Assa which is located in Djibouti with the maximum depth below the sea level is 156m. The third place is the Turfan Depression which is located in china with the depth below the sea level is 154m. The fourth place is the Qattara Depression which is located in Egypt with the depth below the sea level is 133m.

The Geysers

Geysers are jets of boiling water and steam that erupt from beneath the ground where water is heated by volcanic activity. In other words a it is a hot spring which is characterized by discontinued discharge of water which is turned out intensely and accompanied by a vapor phase (Steam). The name geyser called Geysir at Haukadalur, Iceland. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA has more geysers than anywhere else. There are 500 active ones including Steamboat geyser, which erupts about every 91 minutes. The formation of these great streams is because of particular hydro geological conditions. It exists only in a few places on our planet. This is of course, a fairly a rare observable fact. In General the geyser field sites are located in or around volcanic areas which are said to be active, and its effect is purely due to the immediacy of the Magma. The consequential boiling of the pressurized water results in the Geyser effect of steam Spraying of geyser.

The seven continents

The Americas are named after Amerigo Vespucci (1451-1512), explorer with Christopher Columbus. Africa was perhaps originally a Berber tribal name. It was adopted by the Romans as the name of their province, and later spread to the whole continent. Europe is of uncertain origin; it may simply mean mainland. Asia is probably from the Assyrian, asu, sunrise, or east, the name given to the eastern province of the Roman Empire. Australis is Latin for southern; Australia, with New Zea land and other islands, is also considered as part of Oceania, a name invented by the geographer Conrad Malte-Brun (1775-1826). Antarctica is Greek for opposite the Arctic. Arctic comes from the Greek word for bear, as the region lies under the stars of Greek Bear constellation. The Asia is the largest continent in the world which is about 43,608,000 sq km in total area and the percentage of world total is 27.3.

The largest island

An island is a piece of land surrounded by water. Australia is so large it is a continent, not an island; otherwise it would rank first. The largest US Island is Hawaii, which measures 10,456 sq km, and the largest off mainland USA is Kodiak, Alaska, at 9,510 sq km. The smallest island with country status is Pitcairn, at just 4.53 sq km. The largest Island is the Greenland (Kalaatdlit Nunaat) which is about 2,175,600 in sq km. The New Guinea is the second largest Island which is about 789,900 sq km. The Borneo is the third largest island which is about 751,000 sq km. The Madagascar (Malagasy Republic) is the fourth largest one which is about 587,000 sq km. The Baffin Island is the fifth largest one which is about 507,451 sq km in area. The Sumatra, Indonesia is the sixth largest one which is about 422,200 sq km in area. The Honoshu, Japan is the seventh largest one which is about 230,092 sq km in area size.

The Mountain ranges

A Mountain range is a continuous chain of mountains – a mountain is land that rises 300 m or more above its surroundings. The Andes is the longest mountain range which is located in South America which is about 7,242 of kilo meters in length. The second largest mountain range is the Rocky Mountain which is located in North America which is about 6,035 kilo meters of length. The third one is in Asia named Himalayas/Karakoram/Hindu Kush which is about 3,862 kilometers in total length. The fourth longest range is the Great Dividing Range which is in Australia is about 3,621 kilometers of total length. The Trans- Antarctic Mountain is the fifth longest range which is located in Antarctica which is about 3,541 kilometers of total length. People used to think that Kanchenjunga was the world’s highest mountain. Then in 1852 the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India was completed, which measured all the country’s land features.

The largest deserts

Deserts cover about a quarter of the world’s land area. They range from extremely arid and barren sandy deserts (about four percent of the total land surface of the globe), through arid (15 per cent) to semi-arid. Most deserts have features of all these, with one zone merging into the next, so the start and finish of any desert is not exact. Many of the world’s largest deserts are broken down by geographers into smaller desert regions – the Australian Desert includes the Gibson, Great Sandy, Great Victoria and Simpson, for example. The Sahara is the largest desert in the world which is located in the Northern Africa is stretches over the land surface of about 9,100,000 square kilo meters. The second one is the Australian Desert which is in Australia which is about 3,400,000 sq km. The third one is Arabian Peninsula which is located in Southwest Asia which is 2,600,000 sq km. The fourth one is Gobi which is located in central Asia is about 1,300,000 sq km. The North American Desert is the sixth largest desert which is located in US/Mexico which is about 1,300,000 sq km in distance.

Rock or mineral?

There are three categories of rock – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
Igneous Rocks originate deep in the Earth. They erupt from volcanoes as magma and cool or solidity as they rise to the upper layers. Basalt is an igneous rock and so is granite, a very hard rock often used in building. Pumice stone is a soft igneous rock that is ejected from volcanoes. As it cools, it often fills with so many air bubbles that it floats in water.
Sedimentary rocks can be formed by deposits in water (and occasionally by wind). Sandstone is a common example – Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia, is the largest known rock. Organic sedimentary rocks are formed by living plants matter and limestone from the calcium from billions of plants and animals. Chemical sedimentary rocks occur when chemical processes take place and minerals are deposited.
Metamorphic rocks are igneous or sedimentary rocks that have changed as a result of high temperatures or pressures. Slate used on roofs is a familiar example.

The largest meteorite Craters

Many astroblemes or collision sites on earth have been altered by weather over millions of years. Scientists are not always certain whether crater-like structures were caused by meteorites or are the craters of extinct volcanoes. Those listed below are all agreed to be meteorite craters, but new evidence based on photographs from space may reveal other ever larger ones. The largest crater ever found in Vredefort, in South Africa and its diameter measures 300 km in distance. It is the largest verified impact crater ever found in the Planet Earth. The next is in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and its diameter is about 250 km in distance. The Chicxulub, Yucatan, Mexico is the third largest one with the diameter of about 170 km in length. The Fourth one is in Manicougan, Canada with the diameter of about 100 km in distance. The fifth one is in Popogai, Russia with the Diameter of about 100km in distance.
