The Kahun

At the north end of the larger of Sesostris II’s funerary temples, Petrie discovered another building, which he believed was a porter’s lodge. It had a large room, in which a stone trough was let into the ground, with sloping stone slabs around it so that water could run down. Other similar troughs were found in the town of Kahun, and
Petrie believed that they were provided for daily ablutions. To the north of this temple lay the pyramid work-men’s town known as Kahun. A bay about 402 m across, formed by the sweep of the high ground, occupied the area north of the temple, and here the town was built. The buildings all lay in a slight hollow, and were enclosed on three sides by a thick wall. This ran northwards from the end of the north side of the temple for about 402 m; it followed the edge of the bay and then fell down into the desert behind it. Then, it turned eastwards at right angles to enclose the town and then turned southwards for a short way. Thus, the town wall extended along the north, west and partly along the east sides, but on the south side, the site lay open to the Nile Valley. However, at the east wall, Petrie discovered the remains of a gateway, and this led him to the conclusion that, although the site now lay open to the south and along part of the eastern end the wall was also missing, originally
Kahun had been completely walled on four sides. However, the south wall and over half of the east wall had since been entirely lost. Within the town, an area of high ground was cut back to form an elevated platform. This area, called The Acropolis’ by Petrie,
was used to accommodate an important building.

The Instigation

The temple doubtless fell into disrepair some time after Kahun ceased to be occupied, but it was apparently still standing in the 18th Dynasty. However, its final destruction came in the 19th Dynasty, and debris of this date, presumably belonging to the masons who carried out these orders, was found at the site. The stonework
was removed from the temple, at the instigation of Ramesses II, to be re-used in his own temple at Ahnas (Heracleopolis). The same fate befell the smaller temple which adjoined the east face of Sesostris II’s Lahun pyramid. That these blocks had been reemployed at Ahnas was confirmed for Petrie when he saw a granite column drum there, reused for Ramesses II, but bearing the Kaname of Sesostris II. The temple area was subsequently deserted for thousands of years, but finally had a new use, this time as a
Christian burial ground, in the 7th Century AD.

A Rocky Slope

The king’s more distant valley temple was surrounded on three sides by a massive brick wall, some 12.19 m in thickness, and lined with fine limestone blocks. It stood on a prominent rocky slope, just on the edge of the cultivation. Petrie’s excavations here
led him to the conclusion that the greater part of the temple area had been open, and that there was probably a colonnade around it, while at the back of the enclosure (west end) stood a chamber which had been decorated with fine wall reliefs. He also found the remains of some sandstone objects, and pieces of two statues of the king, one of which probably stood in the decorated chamber. However, the most exciting find made here was the discovery of foundation deposits which remained intact, buried under two blocks of stone in a hole about four feet deep which had been excavated in the rock. Four sets of these objects were found here, placed in the hole without any order or arrangement. In Egypt, foundation deposits were put underneath temples when work
began on the building. A possible explanation for such deposits(which, in Petrie’s day, had only previously been found in association with later Egyptian buildings) was that the spirit of the temple would require maintenance and repair and the tools
were provided for the workmen’s spirits to use in this respect. In each of the Kahun sets, there were seven model tools of bronze.

of galena; a quantity of pottery vessels and some baskets.

Hetep-Sesostris

The site of Kahun was excavated in two seasons by William Flinders Petrie, 1888–89 and 1889–90. Limited work was also carried out there by Petrie and Brunton in 1914. The town was built originally to house the officials and workforce engaged in the construction of the pyramid of King Sesostris II at Lahun in c. 1895 BC. Sesostris ordered a town to be built which adjoined the temple in which he was to be worshipped;
both the town and the temple were given the name of ‘Hetep-Sesostris’, meaning ‘Sesostris is satisfied’. The pyramid has already been described; it was built on a natural rock mass which was cut into the required shape, and the upper part was constructed of mud-brick. It was situated in the desert, about 805 km from the cultivation, and on its east side there was a small temple which was decorated with offering scenes to supply the king’s spirit with sustenance after death. About half a mile away, opposite the east side of the pyramid and situated on the edge of the desert, a larger temple, also dedicated to Sesostris II, was built. These buildings
formed the mortuary and valley temples usually seen in the typical pyramid complex.

As a hedge against wavering foreign support, Mr Karzai has also favoured detested warlords—including several whom the Taliban were first launched, in the mid-1990s, to eliminate. To boost his chances of reelection, he has formed alliances with Rashid Dostum, an Uzbek warlord linked to the slaughter of 2,000 Taliban prisoners, and Mohammad Mohaqeq, a Hazara strongman, who claims to have been promised five Hazara cabinet seats for his support. As a campaign adviser, Mr Karzai enlisted Abdul Rasul Sayyaf, an Islamist who welcomed Osama bin Laden to Afghanistan in 1996. In an IRI poll released last week, Afghans said that of all their politicians, they disliked Mr Dostum, Mr Mohaqeq and Mr Sayyaf most.

The re-election of Mr Karzai, a clear favourite in this week’s vote, would in part be an expression of that desire. A small-time leader in the anti-Soviet jihad, from a noble Pushtun family, he was installed as Afghanistan’s leader by America in 2001. As a symbol, then, of international support for the country—and not for anything he achieved, while mostly confined for fear of assassination in his Kabul palace—Mr Karzai went on to win Afghanistan’s inaugural presidential election in 2004. He has achieved little since, presiding over a spread of narco-corruption by which he seems blithely unperturbed. In July Mr Karzai pardoned five well-connected drug-traffickers who had been imprisoned for up to 18 years for attempting to trade heroin for two truckloads of sub-machineguns. These convictions had been considered a groundbreaking success for Afghan counter-narcotics efforts.

Softening the blow, there are two reasons for hope. First, however angry and disappointed, most Afghans still back the reconstruction effort. A recent poll for the International Republican Institute (IRI) showed them to be optimistic on a range of related issues, including security and the economy. General Stanley McChrystal, the overall American commander in Afghanistan, finds succor in this. Asked whether he
considered his mission possible, he said: “Afghanistan is this tremendously complex, Mad Max, utterly devastated society that’s got to be repaired, and I don’t know if we can fix it. But we can’t ignore it. And I believe there are certain forces here, maybe just the will of the people, fatigue with war—there is a tremendous desire to sort it out.”

Afghanistan, it seems wise to assume, is at a critical point. The news is not all bad. Kabul, recently reinforced by some 4,000 freshly-trained police, feels a bit safer these days. And 21,000 extra American troops, including 17,000 already dispatched to Helmand and elsewhere, could begin to show similar results. Mr Karzai’s cabinet has also improved, with half a dozen technocrats recruited in the past year to the main economic ministries. Yet it seems clear that the international effort to bring stability to Afghanistan, in which a strong, somewhat liberal and democratic state can take root, is failing. Among a relatively few foreign experts on the country—as opposed to the thousands of fat salaried Western consultants bunkered in Kabul—the mood is bleak. “We think we’re at the center of things, but we’re not, we’re at the margins of Afghanistan,” says Martine van Bijlert of the Afghanistan Analysts Network, a think-tank. “And we’re so busy having meetings and discussing our plans we’re not even seeing what’s coming at us.” Complete failure— withdrawal by NATO and a return to civil war—seems unimaginable. But failure of some lesser sort, still undefined, looks increasingly inevitable.

DINOSAUR EXTINCTION

THE FIRST DINOSAURS

Herrerasaurus lived about 230 million years ago. Dinosaurs laid eggs, like most other reptiles as well as birds. In recent years, scientists have discovered dinosaur nesting sites that gave them an insight into the early life of dinosaurs. SMALL EGGS
These fossilized sauropod eggs, which are only 6 in (15 cm) in diameter, could have produced young that grew to an adult length of 39 ft (12 m). It probably took sauropods several years to reach their adult size.
HOME LIFE
Female Maiasaura laid about 25 eggs in a nest that was dug in the ground and lined with leaves and twigs. Young Maiasaura were about 12 in (30 cm) long when they hatched. They were reared in the nest until they grew to about 5 ft (1.5 m), when they would be old enough to start fending for themselves.
EARLY START
Unlike the Maiasaura young, who were looked after by their mother for several weeks, Orodromeus young left their nests as soon they hatched from their eggs. The young Orodromeus would have been preyed upon by carnivorous dinosaurs, such as sharp- sighted Troodon.

Warm and cold blood

Reptiles are cold-blooded, which means that they depend on conditions outside their body, such as the Sun’s heat, for temperature control. Warm-blooded animals, such as mammals, produce heat from food energy, have hair for warmth, and sweat to cool down. Although dinosaurs were reptiles, much of their behavior, such as agile running, has more in common with mammals. Scientists are therefore puzzled over whether dinosaurs were warm- or cold blooded.

Small herbivores were more common in this period. Carnivores like Baryonyx may have lived on fish, while tyrannosaurids probably fed on other dinosaurs.

PLANT LIFE
The early Cretaceous landscape abounded in conifers and ginkgoes, as in Jurassic times. Later in this period, flowering plants and shrubs became common, as did trees such as oaks, maples, and walnuts.

The Triassic period was the beginning of the Mesozoic era, which lasted until the end of the Cretaceous period. The first dinosaurs appeared in the Triassic period. These dinosaurs were agile carnivores that evolved rapidly. Some became herbivores. Small mammals also appeared at this time, as did the flying reptiles, called pterosaurs.

Early in the Jurassic period, the herbivorous dinosaurs were mainly prosauropods and small ornithopods. By the late Jurassic, herds of giant sauropods roamed the land. These dinosaurs, as well as other reptiles and mammals, fed on the lush plant life. The first birds appeared, but the pterosaurs remained the rulers of the skies.
PLANT LIFE
Cycads, conifers, and ginkgoes dominated the forests. Ferns and horsetails provided a dense ground cover.

This was the age of the giant dinosaurs. Herds of sauropods marched across plains feeding on treetops. Fierce carnosaurs, such as Allosaurus, preyed on herbivores like Stegosaurus. Not all the dinosaurs were giants – tiny Compsognathus also lived in this period.
