Little Garden, originally uploaded by kiltederic.
In the spring I wanted to start grown an herb garden. So I planted oregano, thyme, basil, and chives.
The basil & chives didn’t grow. My mother-in-law gave me some of her chives, and now they are doing great. The oregano & thyme didn’t do anything either, sort of.
Instead of oregano & thyme I have 2 nice tomato plants and a healthy stalk of dill. I have no idea what happened, must have been a packaging mix up. So I am tending my plants and I have 2 little tomatos growing.
I can’t wait to start ripping up sod to plot out our big garden.
Not much has been happening in the coop department lately. Carrie and I have been white water rafting on the weekends, and just been very busy. I will be getting back to the coop soon, I want that thing done!
I forgot to tell you that I have uploaded photos of the coop project. Go to flickr and check them out.
Today was a busy coop day. I now have four walls, a “person” door for cleaning and a hole for the hen door. I need to get more lumber for the roof.
NOTE: Reclaimed lumber is great. It’s cheap ( as in going to my brother-in-laws house and raiding his lumber pile), it’s ‘green’ no new lumber has been purchased for this project. BUT! Its usally not good quality. Most of the stuff has been very moist, and uneven. But hey, will the chickens care? No. I am learning more because I really have to think out side the box? Yes.
This is fun and “green” Being that i don’t convert my used cooking oil into biodiesle yet, I decided to make lamps using my used cooking oil. They work great, don’t smell bad, and is a fun little project. I did have the fancy parfin lamp oil sitting around so right now my oil lamps are 3/4 used veg oil 1/4 lamp oil.
Last Thursday Caroline and I watched An Inconvenient Truth, and it struck several cords in us, but I don’t feel like spending a bunch of time preaching here so instead I will tell you about our Urban Farm Project.
We have decide to start a vegetable garden and we are going to get some chickens. Seattle allows for 3 chickens. We want to start spending less money on food, and spend more time at home with Ryan together. Lots of plans and thing to do. # 1 on the list is to create the plot for the garden and get it ready to start planting.
I will keep writing and filling you in on the details as they happen.
